SORORITY HISTORY

On January 13, 1913, 22 visionary and ambitious young women founded Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated on the campus of Howard University. Inspired by concern for social welfare and academic excellence, these students committed themselves to social consciousness and public service, de-emphasizing the social aspect of sorority life.

The Sorority established itself in public service almost immediately after its inception by participating in the Women's Suffrage March in Washington, D.C. in March of 1913. From that moment until today, Delta Sigma Theta has remained at the forefront of social action.

Delta Sigma Theta was incorporated in 1930. Today, membership is comprised of over 200,000 predominately Black college educated women, and there are more than 900 chapters located in the US, England, Germany, Panama, Japan, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea.

Consistently evolving to meet the needs of an ever-changing society, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated has created a five-point programmatic thrust to address critical issues:

, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health
, and Political Awareness and Involvement
